Enough with the Questions

One of my favorite songs is the Police’s Every Breath You Take, which also happens to be one of the most misunderstood songs in pop history. Sting has been quoted as saying how disturbed he’s been over the years to learn that so many people have chosen it to be their wedding song, not appreciating that it’s told from the point of view of an obsessive stalker. Glossing over the lyrics, yes, it’s a beautiful ballad, but man, is it ever twisted. Assuming a similar stance, Enough with the Questions is about a guy who hasn’t quite given up hope, though his ship sunk years ago. Written July 25 & December 17, 2009, it’s regularly played by The Wetsuits.

Did you see her with him?   Were they holding hands?

When the music started up, did they dance?

Was there a chill in the air?   Did she lean into him?

When the band came back, did they dance again?

Did he stare into her eyes or did he look elsewhere?

Tell me what makes you think I even care?

Did she look at all surprised when he got down on one knee?

Was there a glimmer in her eyes betraying any thought of me?

Was she steady on her feet walking down the aisle?

Based on what you could see, was that a real or fake smile?

Did they stare into each others’ eyes or did they look elsewhere?

Tell me what makes you think I even care?

OK, I get it, enough with the questions for now

It’s not as if I’m enjoying the answers anyhow

Do you think she’s had enough after twenty years of this?

The kids might have it rough if she gives me a kiss

Why does one look from her still put me in a trance

And make me regret not asking her to dance?

Do they still stare into each others’ eyes or do they look elsewhere?

Tell me what makes you think I even care?

OK, I get it, enough with the questions for now

It’s not as if I’m enjoying the answers anyhow
