California

I wrote this November 8 & 19, 2006 while reflecting on a trip to the Golden State, where I had experienced a great sense of openness and freedom, particularly while driving up Route 88 into the Sierra Nevadas. Absolutely stunning. Musically, this is a Chuck Berry number, which I loved playing with The Nerve.

California crept inside me, burrowed deep down below

After coming back home on Friday, by Sunday I had to go go go

Go back to the high Sierra to wander ‘round the rocks and streams

Cast my eyes up to the heavens, fall into another dream

Where you follow me to California where the days refuse to end

And we sleep out in the open and the future lies ‘round the bend

Oh the truth doesn’t have the color or the cut or the clarity

Of the gem of the master plan I’ve cooked up for you and me

To be free, free to discover what’s still undiscovered

We’re free to leap into the great unknown

I know I’m gonna stay in Tulsa, I know I’m gonna keep my job

I know I’m gonna keep on coasting like every other working slob

I’ll have everything I’ve ever needed, everything to survive

But what I want’s in California waiting for me to arrive

To be free, free to discover what’s still undiscovered

We’re free to leap into the great unknown

To be free, free to discover what’s still undiscovered

We’re free to leap into the great unknown
