Brenda’s Friend Brenda

Whenever my brother-in-law Ron starts to tell a story about his wife’s friend Brenda, he’ll clarify whom he’s talking about, since his wife is named Brenda, too. So he’ll say, “Brenda’s friend Brenda…” For years I thought that’d make a decent song title (I rarely start a song without a good title), and I finally got around to it on January 6, 2009, finishing it on March 25. Originally a simple country-western song, I gave the lyrics to Byon, who made the song much more interesting musically.

I looked at her face, looked at it again

She didn’t quite measure up to her eight-by-ten

I’d heard so much about her, seen some of her work

I’d read about the triumphs, read about the dirt

The Brenda that I know hadn’t done so well

As her friend Brenda, as far as I can tell

I kissed her face, kissed it again

Still didn’t measure up to her eight-by-ten

But what’s important here, or so I propose

I was with somebody that everybody knows

The Brenda that I know is a much better girl

Even though her friend Brenda has conquered the world

If you’re asking me to make the call

If you’re asking me to make the call

If you’re asking me to make the call

Brenda’s friend Brenda is not like Brenda at all
