Blind Man

Just as Two Birds was written while under the influence of Dashiell Hammett, so too was Blind Man on November 6, 2009. The chorus comes from a line spoken by Hammett’s Continental Op, though it was not an original metaphor – – it just happened to be the first place I had seen it. I had no music to go with these lyrics, so I gave them to Byon Yeatts, who had a decent pop tune handy. The Wetsuits play this one regularly.

I’m a blind man                  in a dark room

Looking for a black hat    that isn’t there

I’m a blind man                  in a dark room

Looking for a black hat    that isn’t there

You can’t give me what you don’t have

Still I’d like it anyway

I’ll wait for rain from a cloudless sky

If I have to, I’ll even pray

‘Cause I need to let it all soak in

I need to feel it on my skin

I just don’t see it anywhere else

This spirit, this aura, this vibe

This thing I feel when I’m next to you

It’s as if I’ve died

I need to let it all soak in

I need to feel you on my skin

I’m a blind man                  in a dark room

Looking for a black hat    that isn’t there

Keep me in reach   (Keep me in reach)

Keep me in reach   (Keep me in reach)

Keep me in reach   (Reach)

I’m a blind man                  in a dark room

Looking for a black hat    that isn’t there

I’m a blind man                  in a dark room

Looking for a black hat    that isn’t there

That isn’t there, that isn’t there, that isn’t there
