Bar of America

I had the music months before coming up with the lyrics, which were written on the second floor balcony of the Truckee Hotel in Truckee, California, where I saw the train with these bright yellow boxcars chugging up the mountain across the valley. The chords came on March 27 & May 27; the lyrics on July 18, 2009. Another one I haven’t played live yet, but would like to.

You know and I know this town has gone to seed

Twice in the past month my car door’s been keyed

Outside the Bar of America last night

Drummer for the Dead cover band started a fight

The graffiti-coated freight train rumbles slowly up the mountain side

Yesterday I hopped a car

They kicked me off, I couldn’t get far

Away, though I slept well having tried

Trapped between the highway, Union Pacific line

Only thing slower than the sun is the time

It’s just a town, not a penitentiary

I must have underrated the scenery

The graffiti-coated freight train rumbles slowly up the mountain side

Yesterday I hopped a car

They kicked me off, I couldn’t get far

Away, though I slept well having tried

Honestly this is the only place I’ve known

After a lifetime this nothing town has grown on me

Trapped between the highway, Union Pacific line

Only thing slower than the sun is the time

I’m not in prison, every one of us is free

I must have underrated the scenery

The graffiti-coated freight train rumbles slowly up the mountain side

Yesterday I hopped a car

They kicked me off, I couldn’t get far

Away, though I slept well having tried
