I Know Where I’m Going

When members of The Nerve were about to head in separate cars from a recording studio to a pub in the spring of 2009, Scott said, “I know where I’m going – I just don’t know how to get there.” The phrase amused me. I wrote the lyrics June 13, 2009, completing them in Round Pond on August 16.

All my days are passed in contemplation

Over things you say in a state of consternation

Yet I’d like to stay (and) witness your evolution

Watch you find the way – discover a solution

Are you with me or are you without?

‘Cause if you’re with me I was thinking maybe we could pack our cases in the morning

And maybe head up to the jetport see what flights are heading out and far away

But if you’re not with me I’ll pack a single solitary suitcase in the morning

And watch the miles grow between us as I keep on heading westward every day

My feet aren’t showing as I’m passing through the heather

I know where I’m going, I just don’t know how to get there

Speaking of the unknown, the other night I bet her

That I could have flown ‘cause I’m lighter than a feather

Are you with me or are you without?

‘Cause if you’re with me…

If my dreams serve as any indication

Of how we’ll run out our days

Call it fate, babe, or call it vindication

I’ll take it either way

I can’t tell if you’re damning or you’re praising

Me, it’s just as well, either way it’s still amazing

The two of us fell in love and now we’re chasing

Here and there, pell-mell, after inspiration

Are you with me or are you without?

‘Cause if you’re with me…
